Why was it difficult to harvest cotton before the invention of the cotton gin

Harvesting cotton took a lot of time and effort, and of course, many slaves.  With the creation of the cotton gin, however, preparing cotton was much faster, and much more efficient.  This also had its downsides, because the machine was created, workers who specialized with preparing cotton were unemployed .
