During the time Louis XVI's reign, the revolutionary movement was sweeping France. Much of the bourgeois (what we call today the middle class) was upset that they did not have more of a say in government affairs, and they were calling for changes to allow greater representation of the bourgeois in the Estates General (a gathering of people from the three classes, or estates, of France: Clergy, Nobility, and everyone else).
