Movement of water from the soil to roots can either involve energy-active transport- or can be passive –diffusion. The transpiration pull of the plant as it’s leaves lose water results to negative pressure in the xylem tissues hence water is passively absorbed by the roots. In active transport, energy is used to transport water molecules against an osmotic gradient creating positive pressure in the xylem.
