The figure that emerged from the August Coup as a national hero in Russia was Boris Yeltsin. In August 1991, the Soviet hard-line Communists military tried to overthrow Mikhail Gorbachev. He was put under house arrest. President Boris Yeltsin condemned the coup and commanding those responsible to release Gorbachev. He was released but was seen as incompetent and a failure.
