Galileo through his telescope saw Venus go through phases (light hitting it from the side and then the back) showing that it orbited the Sun. He also saw Moons orbiting Jupiter. This supported the heliocentric model, but did not prove it since other Earth centered models such as the Tychonic system also had Venus showing such phases.
