first you collect the like term then variable one side coefficient one side and constant

it looks like you tried to distribute the 8, which you cant
what you can distribute is the negative sign
so fyi, distribution property
a(b+c) = ab+ac

(4w^2+4w +8) - (2w^2+3w -6)
now, this expression is equivalent to the one below, notice the -1
(4w^2+4w +8) +(-1) (2w^2+3w -6)

we distribute the -1
(4w^2+4w +8) - 2w^2 -3w +6

now, looking at the parenthesis on the left, since you cant add them together because they have different terms, we dont need the parenthesis

4w^2+4w +8 - 2w^2 -3w +6

Since addition is commutative, we can put like terms next to each other
parenthesis used to show like term groups
(4w^2- 2w^2) +(4w -3w) +(6 +8)

now, since the terms within the parenthesis are like terms, you can add/subtract them together
2w^2 + w +14
