Why do you think Alabama would want to be added as a slave state?

It's important to recognize that "States" really just represent people. The majority of the people of Alabama likely wanted to become a slave state because the work that slaves were forced to do at that time (producing/harvesting cotton) was important to their economy. These people would rather have slaves than make the difficult transition to becoming a non-slave society.
