Why is nichrome wire used in a flame test?

The wire simply holds the sample in the flame. Nichrome wire has such a high melting point that the relatively low temperature of the Burning flames won't drive any Ni (Nickel) or Cr (Chromium) atoms into the ionic state and interfere with the color of the ions in the compound which is adhering to the wire.
