The actual quote reads;

“Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”

By means of this quote, Christian  Andersen was buttressing his views about life through the butterfly character. In a sense, we can understand from Christian's quote that the very essence of human living is the ability to have at least; freedom to enjoy what we need for our survival.
