To make x the subject of x+y=w you need to leave x in one side of the equation and the remaining stuff in the other side. In this particulae case you can do so by substracting y in both sides of the equation like this

X + Y - Y = W - Y (the Y's cancell each other)

X + 0 = W - Y

Answer: X=W-Y
