A chain reaction takes place according to the following steps:
A neutron is absorbed by a Uranium atom which causes a fission reaction where, two new atoms of Uranium are created U-238 and U-235. This also releases three neutrons.
The U-238 atom absorbs one neutron and the reaction stops. While the U-235 atom absorbs the other neutron and continues the reaction as in the above step.
