It's green because when it was first put up it had a thin layer of copper coated around it, due to a chemical reaction between the metal and water with age caused it to turn green.
The Statue of Liberty is green because of staying in the water for 25 days. From the copper, the water and bacteria cluttered its way to the metallic/ steel statue.
