A carpenter has a wooden dowel that is 72 cm long. she wants to cut it into two pieces so that one piece is 5 times as long as the other. what are the lengths of the two pieces?

Long Piece: 5x

Short Piece: x

(x) + (5x) = 72

6x = 72

x = 12

Long Piece: 5x  = 5(12)  = 60

Answer: 12 cm and 60 cm
